A Case for Capitalism
***Before you start the following, skip to the end (under “Become”) and read the paragraph about interviewing a business owner. Since this will require some planning, please decide on a person to interview and reach out to him/her as soon as possible to find a time that fits both your schedules. If you don’t know a business owner, ask a parent for suggestions or even visit your favorite place of business and see if an employee can get you in touch with the owner. That person will likely feel it a compliment that you like their business enough to want to meet with him/her!***
What is capitalism? Print and read this essay, written by Ludwig von Mises, to understand the history and impact of capitalism. Mark any new ideas or statements that impact your view.
The terms “capitalism” and “free market” are often used interchangeably but is that accurate? Are they the same thing? Study this article to increase your understanding of these important concepts.

Study the following scriptures. What economic principles and practices do you find? What lead to prosperity or decline? Can you think of other scriptures that deal with economics?

3 Nephi 6:1-5 and 10-15
Interview a business owner, ideally in person. May I suggest that you choose someone other than a parent? Not required but encouraged. This document contains some sample questions. Read through them to get some ideas but please don’t just read the list. Pick 5 or so questions that you are interested in the answers to, or that you think apply to the situation. Feel free to use your own questions. Be very mindful of the time you ask your interviewee to spend with you. Keep it short and be gracious. Come to class prepared to share what you learned.
Please complete this report and be prepared to submit a printed copy to me in class.
Final note:
Whew! You made it to the end of the post. Congratulations! This week is heavy on the reading and videos. Please take your time and spread it out. Come to class prepared to share what you found most interesting from the reading (the book section, the articles or the scriptures), the videos and/or the interview.
