Journeyman: October 24 Public Speaking #2 “It’s all about the delivery”

This week you are going to spend some time analyzing a great speech! Hopefully this will help you discover what makes a speech really stand out and help you start thinking about how to put your own great speech together.

FIRST: Print and Read over this document about the ELEMENTS OF A GREAT SPEECH. (You will want this document as a reference for this class.)

SECOND: Print this fabulous speech “His Grace is Sufficient” by Brad Wilcox.

THIRD: And WATCH the speech HERE.

NOW: Use your printed copy of the speech and label the parts of the speech that you learned about in the ELEMENTS OF A GREAT SPEECH, label the INTRODUCTION, the BODY of the speech, and the CONCLUSION.

Prepare an impromptu speech about “the best fall/winter holiday” (you can choose Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s OR some other holiday that happens between now and the end of the year.) I realize this isn’t truly an “impromptu” speech.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DO AN IMPROMPTU SPEECH?

  1. Choose a topic (a holiday listed above)
  2. Take 3 minutes to prepare your speech.
  3. Talk for 3-5 minutes, and not a second more! (Bonus points/bucks if you give your speech to a family member. Let me know in class.)

You are welcome to use the ideas in the ELEMENTS OF A GREAT SPEECH document you printed earlier to help you organize your speech, I would highly encourage this.

(We will use a variation of this activity in class.)

Have you picked a message that is meaningful to you? Something you would like to prepare a speech about?

Set a timer for ten minutes and use the prompt below to get ideas flowing about what message you feel is important for you share.

“What’s something you’ve learned or experienced that you think could help others?”

Write down your answers.

AND THAT’S IT!!

GREAT JOB! I appreciate that you are willing to take the time to work on developing a new skill.

See you soon!
