Study:
Read Chapters 3, 5, 7, 8, 15, 16 and 17 of Story of the World, Volume 1.
As you finish each chapter make a blurb, doodle some notes or write up some bullet points — any creative way you want to keep the highlights from the chapter in your commonplace book because as usual we will have QUIZ TIME in class where you get the chance to see how much information you retained from your reading 🙂 As you read have your Book of Centuries handy to add to the noteworthy section (see more below).
Put the following dates/people and events in your Book of Centuries (NOTE: Every student must have their own Book of Centuries. These should be done in your best handwriting and please ask an adult for help if the BC timeline confuses you! Use color and pictures if that brings you joy — the point is we’ll be using these for 5 years so take care of them, make them beautiful and tidy. If your mom did not order a Book of Centuries for you then you need to print these pages, bind them and have them ready for the entire school year).
*note that when you see “c.” before a date it stands for the latin word “circa” meaning “around or approximately” because the exact date isn’t known. If there is no “c.” then it means historians have enough sources to pinpoint the dates with more accuracy.
Here are sample pages of what a filled out Book of Centuries spread may look like — notice how the “Century Artifacts” section would allow you artists to draw pictures. If you don’t like to draw consider printing small images and cutting and pasting them! You could write words but this is your opportunity to make your timeline visually engaging. On the right page notice how they used symbols of tanks to represent WW1 and WW2 — if you have an empire or a war that spans many years you can also use a symbol in each box to represent what happens (and leave room to write other things in the box if needed). Make sure to include a legend on your page so you don’t forget what the symbols represent if you choose to use them.
NOTICE the “Noteworthy” section on the left-hand page. I expect there to be information on this page but I will not give you that information. You are responsible for taking note of noteworthy art, music, people, etc and adding it to that section as you read STOW. I will ask you to hold up your timeline each week as a quick check-in to make sure we are all filling out both pages. Please know that I understand it’s been a couple of years since we’ve done a timeline and for some of you it will be your first time. Be patient but take pride in the work you put in this book! Like your commonplace book I think it’s something you will keep forever and look back upon.

c. 3200 BC – Cuneiform Writing developed in Sumer.
c. 2025 BC – Old Assyrian Empire begins.
c. 1810–1750 BC – Hammurabi, King of Old Babylon.
c. 1754 BC – Code of Hammurabi written.
c. 1500–300 BC – Phoenician Civilization (sea traders and alphabet creators).
911–612 BC – Neo-Assyrian Empire at its height.
669–c. 631 BC – Reign of Ashurbanipal, last great king of Assyria, creates the first known library at Nineveh.
626–539 BC – Neo-Babylonian Empire (also called the Chaldean Empire).
605–562 BC – Reign of Nebuchadnezzar II, King of Babylon.
c. 600 BC – Hanging Gardens of Babylon (traditional date; may be legendary).
Understand
Choose ONE of these three options to present on for 2-3 minutes in class. Note there aren’t enough report topics for everyone so if you’d really rather give a report than do a creative project then sign up right away.
Option #1 Make Something :
*Make a clay tablet, writing a quote or something memorable in the cuneiform alphabet
*Make homemade paper, write a quote or something memorable in the cuneiform alphabet or heiroglyphics. (this link could be helpful: http://www.openculture.com/2018/05/introduction-to-writing-in-cuneiform.html)
*Make your own ink and write a quote or something memorable (English or heiroglyphics or cuneiform). Use nice paper and make it lovely to look at. (you can use this tutorial or find one of your own: https://balkantradingcompany.com/how-to-make-deliciously-messy-ancient-egyptian-ink/)
Option #2 Give a Report on any of the topics on the sign-up sheet (sign up here to see topics and to ensure there are no repeats). PLEASE make sure you are adding interesting information that was NOT covered in our reading. Don’t just repeat what comes out of the book, find visuals and dive deeper on the topic.
Option #3 Creatively Teach us about one of the chapters.
Write a song, poem, or a piece of art that can teach us what you learned about any of the chapters we learned about.
Become
For the next few months we are going to be getting to know ancient people up close and personal. You get to choose one person from my list (sign up here on google drive) to study, become friends with, become LIKE and, eventually, to present about.
After you have signed up for a person I would like you to:
Read all the scripture accounts that you can about that person. Learn their story well enough that you can teach it to a sibling/parent from memory.
Write a summarized version of their story in your scripture journal (not your commonplace book).
Write in your scripture journal how this person lived being an example of the believers in WORD, our focus of the month.
Finally, and this is incredibly important because you will be working on this all month long — choose one character trait or virtue of the person you are studying and choose to practice that virtue this month. For example if you are studying about the widow who gave two mites you may choose to practice humility this month — PRAYERFULLY seek inspiration how you personally can apply and practice living in humility this month.
Write something like “Disciples of Christ Project, Month One” and the virtue you choose underneath in your scripture journal. Go ahead and make it pretty 😀
Write your goal/personal application project on a sticky note or on a card where you will see it everyday.
At our next class we will be sharing what we learned from applying our scripture, sharing any miracles we experienced and doing a write-up about becoming like this disicple of Christ.
