Poem, Shuffle Dance, Book Club Reminder and Library Books
- Don’t forget to practice your shuffle dance
- Keep reading All of a Kind Family by Sydney Taylor.
- Don’t forget to bring your library books back.
- This week we will practice the next two stanzas of our poem:
The Blind Man and The Elephant
John Godfrey
It was six men of Indostan, to learning much inclined,
who went to see the elephant (thought all of them were blind),
that each by observation, might satisfy his mind.
The first approached the elephant, and, happening to fall,
against his broad and study side, at once began to bawl:
“[Why], bless me! but the elephant, is nothing but a wall!”
The second feeling of the tusk, cried: “Ho! what have we here,
so very round and smooth and sharp? To me tis lightly clear,
this wonder of an elephant, is very like a spear!”
The third approached the animal, and happening to take, the squirming trunk within his hands, “I see,” quoth he,
the elephant is very like a snake!”
Warm Up Time
Welcome back! I’m so excited for this upcoming week! Let’s get our artistic juices flowing with a new art hub for kids! Grab a paper, pencil marker and somethings to color with and let’s do something a little extra fun for halloween! You choose which one you would like to warm up with. Level 1, level 2, or level 3. When you are done, be sure to hang it somewhere where your dad will find it. Dads need fun creativity to surround them, just like the rest of us. And if it comes from you…. even better!
Spooky Level 1
Spooky level 2 (up above)
Spooky Level 3 (down below)
Good Job! Did you hang it somewhere that your dad will see it?
Music Time
Last time we talked discussed the fun of music and how music often tells a story. Sometimes the story can be told in the words- as in our Witch song that we learned. Other times the story is told through the intensity, crescendos and decrescendos of the music- or in other words, through the loud and soft of the notes- as in The Flight Of The Bumblebee. And other times the story is told by what type of instrument is played- as in Peter And The Wolf.
Here is a new song for you to listen to. It is called, Dance of Mirlitons. First push play but close your eyes as the music plays. When it’s done, open your eyes. What did you imagine was happening? Now push play again, but this time, watch as you listen. Did you imagine that this was happening?
Music can be super expressive. But not everyone will imagine what the music might be saying, the same. The movie above was from Walt Disneys movie, “Fantasia.” This is how his animators envisioned the song in their heads. But watch this next movie. They weren’t dancing flowers! In this version, it is the dance of the reeds, or flutes!
Shape Time
Do you remember how last time in class, we made all sorts of pictures from just simple shapes! We made a grandpa, a little boy, a cat, a wolf. We even made a mean old witch with a hat, a pointy nose and a chin! Shapes are ALL around us! Let’s see, even with sitting RIGHT where you are now can you find something square? Something that has a circle? A triangle? A rectangle? Even a star? The star may be a little tricky, but shapes surround us! And what’s cool about that, is if you get good a drawing basic shapes, you can get good at drawing all sorts of things.
For fun, cut some shapes out of paper- circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. Now let’s see how many different things YOU can make from these shapes! Take a picture of your favorite creations and send them to me! I will show them in class and you can guess who did each one! Here’s a little video to get your brain thinking. I like to watch it on double time.
Color Time
This week we are going to be learning about about color in class. IN fact, we are going to do some painting! So, even though you are wearing your halloween costume to vanguard, bring either a costume that washes well, or an apron that you can put over the top of it so it doesn’t get messy! To get us ready for some fun with colors, lets play around a little bit.
First, try this activity: Be sure when you pour the warm water in the middle that you only pour enough to go half way up the skittle. If you cover the skittles completely, this experiment will NOT work. Call me if this is confusing!
Second, go on a scavenger hunt in your home to find every color of the rainbow. After you have found something of EVERY color in the rainbow, give your mom a high five and get ready for some color fun in class! See ya soon!
