Here’s a checklist for this week’s assignments
Light
This week we’ll be learning about light energy. There is SO much we could discuss and explore with this topic that I had a hard time choosing. This video is a great introduction to light.
Did you catch what percent of light we can actually see? Only 1% – did that surprise you?
What about how fast light travels??? Can you believe it!?! Light can travel around the whole Earth 7 1/2 times in one second! Nothing else that we know of comes close to traveling as fast as light.
Finally, did you notice the words transparent, translucent, and opaque? How about reflect and refract? You’ll get to explore these a bit a home, and we’ll also discuss them in class (with some fun experiments of course).
Let’s Experiment!
Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue? Or why we see so many beautiful colors like red, orange, and pink in the sky at sunset and sunrise? It’s because of the way the air of our atmosphere scatters the light coming from the sun. I think this video from NASA does a great job explaining it!

Now, work with your parent to do this simple experiment at home.
Art Connection
Now, let’s use light to help us make some fun art! Because some things are opaque (meaning light can’t travel through them), they block the light and create a shadow. This link will take you to a fun art project using shadows. They suggest using leaves, but you can use any opaque objects that you’d like (toy dinosaurs, little animals, small dolls or action figures, etc. Get creative!)
Poetry Connection
Light is such a beautiful creation that it has inspired many poets. Can I share a few poems about light that I love with you?

Finally, did you realize that music is just poetry set to a tune? I’ve always liked this song, and recently it was added to the new hymn book!
Now a little challenge for you… I’d like you to try and write your own poem! It can be about light if you want, but you can also pick any topic that interests you. Bring your poem to class on Thursday because we’ll be having a little poetry tea party and sharing what we wrote. (Moms, if writing a poem is too much for your child, they can find a poem to bring and share with us instead).
