This new poem is several stanzas long. We’ll learn a new stanza each week and, if you commit each to memory, you’ll have something impressive to share at Thanksgiving dinner! Read this stanza each day. See if you can memorize it by Thursday. Have you had the experience that it describes? Is it true?

Economics
Last month, we introduced economics as the study of choices and how they are made. Let’s get a little more technical. An essential part of understanding economics is the concept of scarcity. Simply put, scarcity means that there is never enough of a given thing to fully satisfy everyone who wants it. Deciding how to use the limited resources, that have alternative (or other uses), is at the heart of making economic decisions. That’s a lot of big words to say that if you have $5, there are several different ways you could spend it, but you have to choose one.
Print this worksheet and keep it handy to fill out as you watch the following videos.
What type of economy do we have? As you watch this video, pay close attention to types of economies. What is a command economy? What is a market economy? What else do you learn?
When someone chooses to open a business, there are many things to keep in mind. Risk and reward play big factors in the experience. Can you think of a time that you took a risk? Why did you do it? Was there something you hoped to gain? As you watch the following video, ask yourself what role risk and reward play in operating a business.
The terms “free market” and “capitalism” are often used interchangeably. Watch this video to get a peak into the difference that a free market economy can make.

Interview
For our last class, I asked you to start thinking of a business owner that you could interview. As a reminder, this is what I posted last time:
Do you know anyone who owns his own business? For a future class, you will be asked to interview a business owner (preferably not one of your parents). Be thinking of who you might want to consider for this. If you don’t know someone, think of a favorite business. Perhaps you can reach out and see if that owner would be willing to answer a few questions. For right now, maybe start making a list of possibilities.
Before our class this week, please interview a business owner, ideally in person. May I suggest that you choose someone other than a parent? Not required but encouraged. This document contains some sample questions. Read through them to get some ideas but please don’t just read the list. Pick 5 or so questions that you are interested in the answers to, or that you think apply to the situation. Feel free to use your own questions. Be very mindful of the time you ask your interviewee to spend with you. Keep it short and be gracious. Be sure to thank them for their time. Come to class prepared to share what you learned.
