You’d soon forget to think ’twas true
That someone was unkind to you.
If you were busy being glad
And cheering people who seem sad,
Although your heart might ache a bit,
You’d soon forget to notice it.
If you were busy being good,
And doing just the best you could,
You’d not have time to blame some man
Who’s doing just the best he can.
If you were busy being true
To what you know you ought to do,
You’d be so busy you’d forget
The blunders of the folks you’ve met.
If you were busy being right,
You’d find yourself too busy quite
To criticize your brother long,

Economics
Last month, we talked about the concepts of scarcity and opportunity cost. To review, scarcity means that there is never enough of a given thing to fully satisfy everyone who wants it. Deciding how to use the limited resources, that have alternative (or other uses), is at the heart of making economic decisions. Watch these videos to review those concepts and learn a few more.
Take out a piece of paper and write down some of the concepts you think are important as you watch the following videos.

Where do new businesses come from? Generally, it all begins with an idea. At the core of a free market economy is the idea of meeting someone’s need or desire. Sometimes that starts with the thought “Wouldn’t it be great if…?” Watch this video for some examples or businesses that came from that question and became possibilites because of capitalism or the free market.
Shark Tank is a show where people present their ideas to investors in hopes of convincing one of them to help fund their business ideas. Watch this video for some inspiration from kids like you! Pay attention to how each one got his or her idea.

Read the Tuttle Twins and their Spectacular Show Business. Come to class prepared to discuss what they learned. (If you don’t have access to the book, please reach out to me and we’ll figure it out!)
Research/Imagine and Present
Think of a favorite product, service or store. Do you like to eat at McDonalds? Watch animated movies? Eat Nutella? Rent a place from AirBnB? Ride an Uber? What is the story behind these companies? Who started the company? Learn what you can and prepare a presentation to share with the class. Or, create your own product or service idea (you don’t have to actually create the product) and prepare a commercial-type presentation like the ones you saw on the Shark Tank clip to introduce it to us.
Book Club
Our next book is Island of the Blue Dolphins. Our book club meeting will be after the Christmas break but it’s never too early to get started…
