Welcome back!
IMPORTANT: This week, we will have an extra sewing workshop day on Tuesday, Nov 5, from 1-3 at Melissa’s house! And just a friendly reminder to prewash and dry your fabrics before cutting, folks.
We will send a reminder to all the moms as well about the sewing workshop day. This is not required but it is highly recommended that you come if you want any help with your individual project! This week we will help you measure yourself, figure out pattern stuff, know what fabric and supplies to look for, start cutting your fabric (if you prewash and dry it beforehand, cough, cough), etc. This will be a really good chance to get up and going with your project if you haven’t already started, or if you have we would love to see what you’re up to. 🙂
Note: The format for sewing class will be to work on your individual projects at home and at the sewing workshop days, and then to check in and troubleshoot your projects and do other sewing activities in class.
In order to come to class, do this:
- Work at least 1 hour on your current individual project at home and/or at the sewing workshop day (Tuesday, 1-3) and report your progress and any help you need HERE (And remember that sourcing supplies, watching a tutorial, finding a pattern, reading instructions, practicing a new technique you’ll need, etc., all count as working on your project). If you are new this week and haven’t chosen a project, go back to the first post (week 1), and do the homework assignments listed there in order to come this week (a couple video tutorials, sewing a square, and choosing a project–these will get you set up to begin sewing). If you are confused on how to start your project or need any other help, please text Melissa and Annabelle at 385-230-1145!
- Bring whatever you have been able to do on your project to class to share and troubleshoot! (I’d recommend sticking it in a cardboard box or a bin of some kind so you don’t lose any parts or pieces.) Please also bring a pair of fabric scissors if you have one for our in class activity.
Individual Project Guidance:
Some of you picked tutorials/patterns that tell you exactly what to get or do, so I’m assuming you are following that. A few people need some additional guidance, perhaps, so I will put that below. Again, if I missed you here and you need help, contact Melissa and Annabelle at 385-230-1145!
JudySue: I texted your mom a link to the hair accessory patterns!
Marilee: I’m not sure which project you picked to start, (curtains? jumpsuit? jumper? skirt?) so let us know if you need any guidance!
Vilate: Your pillowcases tutorial looks great! Let us know if you need any help getting set up.
Lauren: Are you working on your stool covers or apron first? Both look so cute!!
Cael: Are you working on your tie first, or a tee, or something else? These sound like great plans!
Ethan: Your cloak turned out AMAZING! Way to go, dude!!! Is a vest next or something else?’
Anya: We need to help you make an overalls pattern. Prewash your fabric!
Maddy: Your skirt is lovely! Way to go with all that gathering, girl. So proud. Hope to see you again. 😉 Any other sewing dreams right now??
SKIRT-MAKING GIRLS: (Lenora, Emma, Kenzi, Anya?, Marilee?)
Emma: We can maybe use the tiered skirt tutorial listed under the advice to Lenora and Kenzi, below, but change the number of tiers. I am thinking about this to make it most like your example.
Lenora, Kenzi, Others Who Might Need It: check out these three skirt tutorials (maybe a little better quality than the one posted on the last post)–
- easiest, would be a great win for a first project!: https://www.shrimpsaladcircus.com/sew-super-simple-skirt-sewing-101/
- pretty easy but has pockets etc.: https://www.roseryapparel.com/videos/diy-gathered-midi-skirt
- another tiered skirt so more gathering required, but explained better I think than the original one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=0xlltbPezFE
VEST-MAKING BOYS: (Tommy, Ethan, Will)
I have the book, The Gentleman’s Wardrobe, with the vest pattern she used in the video from the last post. We can measure you this week, and it would be great if you can find some cheap fabric, a sheet, etc, to make a practice vest to check the fit.
DRESS-MAKING GIRLS: (Anna, Hazel, Eliza, anyone else now?)
Annabelle will advise you, let us know what you need! She can help you figure out how to make a pattern for the type of dress you want.
SUIT-MAKING BOYS: (Alex, Truman)
We can help you get measured and pick a pattern size and get going this week! Bring your patterns/book, come on Tuesday if you can, and if you are going to make a practice suit to check fit, try to find some fabric for that (sheet, etc.).
Can’t wait to see you all on Thursday!!! (And hopefully Tuesday ;))
