  3. Keep reading Summer Of The Monkeys by Wilson Rawls

Print your checklist. We are doing a Vanbucks store on Thursday, so you’ll want to complete EVERYTHING! Plus there’s a way to earn bonus Vanbucks.

I’ve been SO EXCITED to get to this topic! I am fascinated by tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, forest fires, and all things weather related! Have you ever experienced one of these incredible and often terrifying forces of nature? Utah is pretty chill, we don’t really get many of these extreme conditions. However, we do get forest fires. In 2020 the mountain by my house caught on fire. Here’s a video and some pictures of that

Crazy, right? But an even crazier story happened in 2018 near Elk Ridge, take a moment to read this article about Miracle Mountain! Some of you may remember this event!

I was talking to a friend right after this happened, and she told me an incredible account of that day that gave me chills. She said that the firefighters were so scared because the wind was pushing the fire right to the homes, and they were powerless against the flames. One firefighter, sure that these homes were about to catch fire, looked over to see a row of angels stopping the flames! They were standing side by side, protecting those homes! The firefighter said he would never forget the miracle he saw that day. There’s no explanation for this other than the power of God. And just so you know, that same power from our loving Heavenly Father is available to you every day of your life, if you choose Him.

I want to hear your stories about weather and climate when we meet on Thursday, so come prepared to share.

Okay, go grab your Planet Earth book. This is going to be a FUN week! We will be working with the section of your book called Weather and Climate. Flip through Pgs 89-112 to get familiar with all of our topics. However, we’re going to do things much differently this week than we have in the past. You can reference your book, but there’s no required reading.

  1. Watch this video made by a group of Junior High students, and then text me the answers to the following questions:
    • What is the difference between weather and climate?
    • Is it climate or weather that causes Utah to have the “greatest snow on earth”? Please explain your answer.
    • Is it climate or weather that has caused the colorful fall leaves on our trees outside? Please explain your answer.
    • What will the consequences be if we do not reduce our carbon waste (Co2, pollution)?
  2. Now, choose at least 2 subtopics (related to weather and climate) that really interest you, and learn all you can about them. Explore a lot of resources (magazines, books, YouTube, movies, documentaries etc). Really dive into it and become an expert. One tip to make this a good use of your time: open a Google doc before your research. Copy and paste any cool facts, bits of information, and interesting pictures. Then when you go to make your pages on Canva, it will be super quick and easy. For your convenience, I made a list of possible subtopics you can use. You do not have to stick to this list, but you can. Will you please put your name next to the subtopics you choose?
  3. As you research your topic, look for a REALLY COOL video to show the class on Thursday. Please try to find one that is 5 minutes or less, but if its a fantastic video, it can be longer. Copy and paste the link to your video on the subtopics list.

Time to pause your learning about our amazing Earth, and learn some new Canva skills! Woo hoo! Choose 1 or more of the videos below and practice what they are teaching you. I want you to use these new Canva skills on your own Earth Science books you are creating. I also want you to include one “weird but true” fact on each page. You can find these by simply googling “weird but true fact about _______”. You will be showing the class what you learned, and how you incorporated it into your pages. Remember, this is supposed to be HARD! That’s how we learn and grow.

You can also find any other Canva skill that interests you. You do not have to choose one of these. Remember that your book is going to be printed, so you won’t want to include any videos or animations on your pages.

This week you need to create 2 (or more) double page spreads for your Earth Science book on Canva. That’s 4 pages total. Remember the double pages will be right next to each other, so make them look cohesive.

  1. Clear title
  2. Short summary of your topic, right underneath your title
  3. 5 facts, one being a “weird but true” fact
  4. Use a new canva skill
  5. Interesting pictures

THAT’S IT! You did it! You made it to the end of the third Earth Science blog post. Give yourself a hug and repeat after me: “I am a great caretaker of this Earth! I am an incredible child of god!”. I couldn’t be more proud of you! I can’t wait to see you Thursday.
