Get Ready for the Ball (and the Village Too!)
Summer Costume Prep for Our Cinderella Play
We’re so excited to announce that our homeschool co-op will be putting on a play next February—a beautiful, classic retelling of Cinderella! While auditions won’t happen until the end of August, there’s one important thing everyone can begin working on right now: costumes!
Each student will need two basic costumes no matter what part they end up playing:
1.
A Peasant Costume
This will be used in our opening village scene and possibly again mid-play. Think simple, old-fashioned clothing in earth tones or muted colors—nothing modern. Some ideas include:
- Long skirts and aprons for girls
- Loose shirts, vests, and simple trousers for boys
- Shawls, caps, or bonnets
- Worn-in shoes or boots
Look for inspiration in thrift stores, theater resale shops, or even your own closet. Think “storybook village” — humble, rustic, and timeless.

A Ball Outfit
Everyone will participate in the grand ball scenes, so we want each child to feel special and elegant!
- Girls will need a formal dress (ideally floor-length or tea-length) — think twirly, princess-worthy, and dreamy. Light or rich colors are both welcome!
- Boys will need dress pants, a white or colored button-up shirt, and either a vest, jacket, or tie. Think “storybook prince” or “royal court guest.”
Dancing is part of the show, so costumes should be comfortable enough to move in. Try to avoid long trains or high heels that might trip dancers up.
What You Can Do This Summer:
- Start gathering your two outfits: thrift, borrow, sew, or brainstorm with friends.
- Try things on for fit and comfort. These may need adjusting before the show.
- Girls working on ballgowns? Start sewing early! This is a great summer project for budding seamstresses (and helpful parents!).
- Label your items! Especially if they’ll be used for practice in the fall.
What’s Next?
- Auditions: End of August
- Leads (Cinderella, Prince, Fairy Godmother, etc.) will receive additional costume assignments in early fall.
- Dance rehearsals begin in the fall, so having costumes (or close approximations) by then will help us stage and block scenes more effectively.
