March 21 Leadership Journeyman (Book writing)

I have some exciting news – Spanish Fork Library has invited all of you to do a book signing event on April 18! More news to follow.

We are just about finished with our books!

Here is what is left after your editing is done:

  • Formatting
  • Front and back matter
  • Cover design
  • Uploading to Amazon

In class, I am going to work with you one-on-one to finish up formatting and/or front and back matter. There is no reading assignment or discussion – just keep editing your books!

Front matter includes:

  • First page – name of book and author again
  • Copyright page
  • Dedication (if desired)
  • Disclaimer (probably only applicable to Sam and Truman)
  • Table of Contents

Back matter includes:

  • Acknowledgements (if desired)
  • About the Author
  • Notes and References (if needed)
  • Several blank pages for notes

You can get examples of front and back matter with most books, but I will have more examples on Thursday.

For font choice, you want to use a font that will embed into Word (don’t worry about the process for that now). Good choices include:

  • Garamond
  • Georgia
  • Baskerville
  • Sabon
  • Verdana is good for the Table of Contents and Chapter Titles

For font size:

  • Chapter Titles should be at least 16 pt
  • Sub-titles should be 14 pt
  • Chapter font should be 12 pt

Other notes:

  • The paragraph alignment should probably be justified
  • The first paragraph of a chapter should not be intended
  • All subsequent chapters should be indented
  • When starting a new chapter use a page break (Control Enter)
  • Line spacing should be 1.2 or 1.3

If possible, please bring the laptop that you have your book on.

If would be ideal if you can download the template ahead of time for your book size. You can do that here: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834230

Most of you are using 6×9, while I believe Anabelle is using 8.5×11. I recommend you download the Template with Sample Content and start uploading your content there.

Once you know how many pages your book is, you can design your cover here: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/cover-templates

You can also hire out cover design through Fiverr.

This would be a good time to set up an Amazon KDP account. Unfortunately, as setting up an account requires signing a contract, your parents will need to do this for you. They can set up the account here: https://kdp.amazon.com/

Please reach out if you have any questions. You can text Ryan at 801-360-3285. I would love an update as soon as possible from each of you about where you are in the process.
