Make Your Brain Dance! April 26-May 2

Here is your printable checklist. (Please print this, it will tell you how many Vanbucks you can earn this week to spend at the store)

Okay, now we’re getting into the good stuff! Vanguard this week is all about YOU! What makes you happy? What makes you excited to learn? What makes your BRAIN DANCE?!?!

Sometimes as we get older, we think it’s embarrassing to do certain things that could bring us joy- like goofy dancing. Isn’t that sad? I want you to feel free to be yourself, and seek out those things that bring joy to your day. So grab a friend or family member, and put on your favorite dancing song. I want you both to dance your silliest dance for at least 2 minutes. Set a timer if you can! Pay attention to how your mood changes as you dance. I would love for you to text me a picture of your most ridiculous dance move! If you don’t have a favorite song to dance to, you can borrow mine:

Make Your Brain Dance!

Did you know that just like your body dances when you hear your favorite song, your brain can “dance” when you learn about something that excites you? Learning is so much fun when this happens! For your final week of Vanguard, you get to choose what you learn about! Yay! I hope you have a joyous time making your brain dance. Here are the steps you will take:

  1. Make a list of a few things that are really interesting to you! This could be a certain bird that has fascinating behaviors, something crazy that happens in nature like sailing rocks or bio luminescence. Or maybe you have some questions that interest you like “How are video games created?”, “How can I become a fashion designer?” or “Are there really aliens at Area 51”?. Make a list of 3-5 things that fascinate you. Keep this list somewhere safe. It would be awesome if you explored all of them over the summer! Here’s an example of part of my list:
    • Volcanic lightning, Emergency preparedness, Angels on the other side of the veil who are sent to help us, Growing beautiful gardens, How to build unshakable faith, and interior design
  2. Choose one of the items on your list, and write 5 questions you have about your topic. This is a very important skill to develop. Its called learning how to learn. I’ll give you an example:
    • If I chose to learn about volcanic lightning, I would write down “What causes it to happen?”, “Would someone die if the lightning struck them?”, “If they die, what exactly happens to them?”, “Has there ever been volcanic lightning in the US?”, and “How is volcanic lightning different from regular lightning?”.
  3. Now, go on an EPIC LEARNING ADVENTURE! Find out everything you can about your topic. Search books, the internet, documentaries, or talk to people who know about your topic. Sometimes I even ask Heavenly Father to help me understand things. I believe Heavenly Father loves teaching us about our world. Remember: I want you to really make your brain dance! Dig into every interesting detail. If you find something during your adventure that excites you, follow it until you learn all you can.
  4. The next stop on your epic learning adventure is to create something that teaches us about your topic. There are hundreds of options for you to choose from! Choose something that makes you happy, and come prepared on Thursday to present your topic. Here are some ideas:
  5. The last stop on your learning adventure is to copy this quote in your journal (or Project life book), and spend at least 5 minutes writing/reflecting on your purpose in life. Here are some questions to get you thinking: What are your gifts and talents? How do these gifts relate to the original list you made of your interests? Do you think Heavenly Father designed certain people to accomplish certain things? Why do you think every person in the world has a different set of talents and interests? What can you do this summer to courageously follow your interests?

I can’t wait to hear all about your topics on Thursday! -Sister Garrett
