Map
You are welcome to memorize the Africa Song as well as the countries in Africa. Warning: It is a hard one! Although I have lots of faith in you to do that, I wondered if you would like to just know where the continent of Africa is, and take your map time and review and work on any continents you aren’t as strong on. You decide, but by the end of the month I am hoping you know the following:
Wouldn’t it be AMAZING to know almost all of the countries in the world! So AMAZING!
Project
I grew up thinking Africa was a desert. All desert. That sort of made sense to me since drought, famine and hunger are a problem there. I was so surprised to find out that there are mountains, savannas, and rainforests in Africa as well. Create something that shows the different landscapes in Africa by designing something that shows us what the following looks like:
Desert
Savanna
Grassland
Forest
Tropical rainforest
(You are going to have to Google those landscapes so you know what they look like. )Include some African animals that live in each type of landscape. You may also want to include different things that are mined in Africa. Did you know Africa is rich in gold and coal. You may want to include the minerals that are mined as well.
Books!
Check out books on Africa from the library. Ask your mom. She may have a few already available for you. Picture books are my favorite way to learn! Here are a few I suggested that your mom may have purchased.
Ashanti to Zulu
Beatrice’s Goat
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (This one is longer. Our family is doing this as a read-a-loud.)
Movie Time
Ask your parents first! Host a movie night for your family. Here are some ideas for this month:
The Air Up There
Cheetah, Tarzan
Cheetah
Mia and the White Lion
Khumba
Madagascar
Mighty Joe Young
Lion King
Gorillas in the Mist
The Gods Must Be Crazy (I like this one a lot.)
Cleopatra
Book Club
Our Redwall book party is coming up in two short weeks! Please continue reading and plan to have the book finished by April 18th.
Poem
Review the first three stanzas and memorize the fourth.
Today We Had Some Weather
Today we had some weather
like I’ve never seen before,
so I pulled on my galoshes
and I headed out the door.
It sprinkled, first so lightly,
it could easily be mist.
A tornado then came dancing by,
it swung and did the twist.
The fogbanks opened up their vaults
and let out all their fogs,
and the dog pound took a pounding;
it was raining cats and dogs.
It started raining buckets,
then the rain came down in sheets.
I had never seen so many
sheets and buckets in the streets.

In class
We will see how well you carry water on your head, have a fashion show to see what is really attractive, and talk a little about what it means to be poor.
Yearbook
In class we are going to have YEARBOOK training! We’ll show you how to create pages in Canva for the yearbook. Here’s an introductory message from me: CLICK HERE! You can read the letter. It’s kind of long, but may give you an idea of how we are going to create the yearbook. Don’t panic!!!! We’ll show you everything you need to know! You can begin signing up for pages if you’d like or you can wait until after class so you know what you are getting into!!!
Attention moms!!!! Here’s a link to the Google Drive where I have folders for you to upload your pics. What a pain. But it will be worth it!
